Housing Strategy

The housing crisis in Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) affects the well-being of our communities. Rooted in decades of inadequate interventions, the conditions of housing on reserve were officially recognized as a collective emergency in 2014 by Chiefs-in-Assembly. In response to the crisis, the NAN Housing Strategy, endorsed by Chiefs-in-Assembly in August 2022, focuses on creating housing solutions that are deeply rooted in First Nations knowledge and local needs.

The Housing Strategy’s vision is to create positive change in the current housing systems to support health and wellness and to fulfill the human right of access to adequate housing.
