Community-Led Design for Specialized Housing in the North
Project Overview
The Community-Led Designs for Specialized Housing in the North (CLDSHN) project is changing how housing is designed and built across NAN Territory. It addresses the gap left by historical and existing policies , which often promote a one-size-fits-all home that does not meet the needs of those community members facing the greatest housing needs: single adults, those in need of emergency housing and those in need of housing with support, such as Elders or people with disabilities.

The project “Community Led Designs for Specialized Housing in the North” received funding from the Housing Supply Challenge – Getting Started Round, however, the views expressed are the personal views of the author and CMHC accepts no responsibility for them.

Co-Creation: CLDSHN brings together community members, local technical experts, and architects to design housing that reflects the lived experiences of those in need of specialized housing
Shovel-Ready Designs: The project develops freely accessible housing plans that are ready for immediate construction, eliminating major pre-construction barriers, and allowing for faster and more effective construction
Implementation Toolkits: To support the practical application of these designs, we are producing implementation toolkits that provide guidance on funding, tendering and procurement, and project management
