True Cost of Housing
Project Overview
Beyond creating a long-term housing strategy, immediate support and investment are urgently needed at the community level to address the ongoing housing crisis. The True Cost of Housing project is collecting detailed data from housing projects across NAN Territory over the past five years.

The project was developed from the conversations with housing managers and Chiefs and Councils that identified the gaps in current funding programs. It recognizes that there are many additional costs and challenges to constructing homes in the north that are not covered such as: transportation, materials costs, external labour, reliance on winter road or barge, selected foundation systems and operation and maintenance costs.

By looking at total costs, design details, funding sources and logistics, the project is developing a cost model that will include average costs by location, materials and labour.

The findings will support the development of more accurate costing models and strengthen NAN's advocacy for appropriate funding mechanisms.
