NAN's Oshkaatisak Annual Youth Gathering 2025

NAN's Infrastructure and Housing Department, along with Together Design Lab, were honored to be apart of the Annual Oshkaatisak Gathering hosted in Thunder Bay. The NAN & TDL team shared work on recently housing projects, hosted housing-themed activities and provided space for Youth to share their thoughts on housing. Thank you to the NAN Oshkaatiskat Council for hosting us at your event!

NAN Housing and Infrastructure Attends NAN Student Orientation

NAN's Infrastructure and Housing Department recently attended NAN's Student Orientation with other organizations to welcome NAN students to Thunder Bay. During the event, NAN's Infrastructure and Housing staff discussed the department's efforts to advocate for improved housing and infrastructure in NAN communities. This initiative aimed to foster a better understanding of how these services impact students and their communities, highlighting the ongoing commitment to improving living conditions in NAN Communities.

NAN Housing and Infrastructure Team Receives 2024 Excellence in Community-Campus Research Partnership Award

We are excited to announce that we have been awarded the 2024 Excellence in Community-Campus Research Partnership Award along with our partners at Together Design Lab. Michael McKay, Director of Housing and Infrastructure and Dr. Shelagh McCartney, Director of Together Design Lab at Toronto Metropolitan University, accepted the award on behalf of the Community Voices Building Homes in NAN Partnership.

Weda-Nokiwinun, Building Homes in Partnership
April 18th and 19th 2024
The 2024 NAN Housing Summit brought together leadership, housing professional and community members on April 17th and 18th at the Valhalla Hotel and Conference Centre in Thunder Bay. This year's event provided an opportunity to share progress, exchange knowledge and strengthen partnerships around the theme of Building Houses in Partnership.
Michael McKay, Director of NAN Housing and Infrastructure and Jeffrey Herskovits from Together Design Lab, presented an overview of the NAN Housing Strategy and shared an update on key projects from the past year. These include Creating a Home for Our Youth, Recording our Truth, addressing immediate housing needs and exploring the True Cost of Housing in Northern Communities.
CMHC's National Housing Conference
April 2nd 2024
On March 18th and 19th, the NAN Infrastructure and Housing Department took part in CMHC's National Housing Conference in Ottawa, Ontario. Under the theme "Unlocking Solutions Together", the event provided a platform to highlight the NAN Housing Strategy and the Community Led Designs for Specialized Housing in the North (CLDSHN) project to a national and international audience.
As part of the CMHC Innovation Zone, the NAN team set up display showcasing the innovative housing solutions developed for northern communities. In addition, the team had the honour of presenting their work to the Deputy Secretary of the United States, Housing and Urban Development.

National Housing Day: A Call for Safe, Affordable Housing for All
November 22, 2023
On National Housing Day, and every day, we recognize the vital importance of safe and healthy housing. Every family and individual deserves access to safe, affordable and appropriate housing within their community.
We are committed to tackling the housing crisis in NAN Territory through the implementation of the NAN Housing Strategy and its projects. This strategy is built on the knowledge and lived experiences of NAN Members, supporting the right to self-determination in housing in our Nations. A community-based approach is key to understanding the needs and solutions required to address the housing emergency in NAN Territory.
